Netflix may have finally decided the game

Boggle it has become a spectacle in my house. Everyone gathers around the TV while one of us is playing, and the crowd helps shout out the words or wait patiently for their turn. There is a lot of crying. But it’s a game that my family can easily jump into, and when someone starts playing, it seems like everyone runs into the room to join in.

The gaming giant has been trying to disrupt gaming for half a century now, and outside of a few rare devices like. Grand Theft Auto and Squid Games: Freeit didn’t bore much. But it’s his a new TV gamewhich was launched last year and includes the likes of Boggle and party games based on everything from Lego The knives are outNetflix may have finally decided that Gaming makes sense for the service. You don’t need controllers: Each player just uses their own phone.

As Netflix continues to expand beyond TV shows and movies, into everything from live games to talent competition and audience interactionThis type of game can be a service pillar. And it all starts with Boggle.

It’s been a rough road so far. Netflix started releasing games in 2021, and at first, it looked like a big deal. Games are included as part of the regular subscription, and initially the service offered a good selection of mobile games. There were ports of beloved indie titles such as a sci-fi strategy game Violationas well as special roles such as an interesting journey Laya’s Horizon. This became a side of the game based on Netflix shows like The Queen’s Gambit and Love Is Blind. If you are looking for great games for your phone, Netflix was the best platform.

The problem is that few people seem to realize – early reports indicate that less than 1 percent of the registrants were playing games. That didn’t stop Netflix from trying. It spent a lot of money in places, adding big games to the platform, acquiring developers, and sometimes even trying to create a AAA level studio of his own. But there was no consistency, and the method moved constantly.

For example, last year Netflix’s president of gaming Alain Tascan described four pillars that could define the company’s efforts.telling me that “we have to find our voice.” But since then there have been changes. The two sports that were shown at the event in 2025 were martial arts Squid Games: Free it’s a great upcoming MMO Crossing the Spirit; since then Netflix closed the studio back Released and Crossing the Spirit creator Spry Fox bought itself from Netflix to go empty-handed. The streamer has thrown a lot of money into the problem of gaming, but mostly met with failure. The AAA studio was shut down before releasing the game.

Sports is not an easy place to compete. Some rich companies like it Amazon has had a hard time getting aheadand even the most popular games like Fortnite they are suffering. The thing with Netflix, however, is that its gaming endeavors have always been different from everything else they’re doing. Hades on my phone it’s finebut it’s something I need to know and research. It’s not something I’d stumble upon while browsing Netflix, and it’s not something that’s going to keep me in the main Netflix app, which is what the company wants.

But a new TV game solves this problem. In the past, Netflix games were separate apps that you downloaded to your phone. Now they are available in one place with everything else on Netflix – there is a tab at the top of the program next to movies and television – making them feel like part of the service. My family can watch it Raise a Dead Man and then immediately play a The knives are out-mystery theme game later. Gaming is no longer a separate service that Netflix does, it’s just part of Netflix.

TV shows seem to be off to a good start, but there are a few things that need to happen before they become a mainstay on Netflix. For one thing, they need variety. There is great potential to expand the offering and reach a wider audience. Netflix’s original series of TV shows has said especially for family friendly gamesbut the company has also seen success with early attempts to explain if your choice Black Mirror sprout Bandersnatch. The Strange Things-Esque adventure game Oxenfree available on TV here (Netflix got it Oxenfree developer Night School in 2021), which is a good first step in expanding the number of games available. There is a lot of room for growth.

The game also needs to be more accessible. Netflix’s TV show is currently in a bit of a beta stage, as it’s available on some platforms – mostly smart TVs and set-top boxes – but not all. For example, I can play games via Netflix on my Roku stick, but not my Apple TV. Making them an accessible part of the platform, no matter what device you’re on, will be important.

Most importantly, Netflix needs to stick around. This will not work if the company decides to change its strategy again in a few months. It should give its subscribers time to realize, hey, I can play with them here. The early years of the Netflix show have been plagued by chaos, inconsistencies, and things being thrown against the wall to see if they would stick. Something stuck – now Netflix has to build on it.
