NEOM’s previous goal…injury concern in Uruguay camp ahead of Saudi Arabia match

Uruguay, led by veteran Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, are facing anxious hours just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup after one of the team’s stars suffered a serious injury.

The star of the Brazilian “Flamengo” Georgian de Arascaeta suffered a muscle injury during training, which puts his participation in the tournament into serious doubt, Marca newspaper reports.

The “Flamengo” player left training with his teammates after experiencing muscle pains in the calf area, and will undergo various medical tests in the coming hours to determine the severity of the injury and whether he can continue in the Uruguay national team camp.

This situation is of particular concern to coach Bielsa, as De Arascaeta was already recovering from a fractured spine suffered at the end of April, an injury that even required surgery.

While it looked like she was close to overcoming this problem, this new incident threatens to keep her away from the big date.

De Arascaeta is an essential part of Bielsa’s plan and is one of the players most capable of playing and switching in attack, and so his absence will be a major blow to Uruguay’s ambitions as the team will lose their main creative pillar in attack.

The rules of the World Cup state that players included in the final list can only be replaced in case of injury or serious illness. The substitute must also be from the preliminary list, and the change is made up to 24 hours before the team’s first match, and it requires the express approval of FIFA.

It’s worth noting that De Arascaeta was close to moving to Saudi Arabia’s Roshan Professional League in last winter’s transfer window via NEOM before talks broke down between the two sides.

The Uruguay national team will begin their matches in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup by meeting with the Saudi Arabian national team on June 16, then they will meet with Cape Verde and Spain on the 22nd and 27th of the same month.
