Neighbors star Terrence Donovan has died at the age of 90

British-Australian actor Terence Donovan – best known for his roles in Home and Away – has died aged 90, his family said.

His son, actor Jason Donovan, confirmed his father died peacefully on Saturday night in Melbourne, Australia.

“Our dad had a larger than life character. He was our best friend … our world! We will miss him dearly but take comfort in knowing we are all by his side in his final days,” he wrote.

The London-born actor was best known for his roles in Australian police dramas Episode 4 and Cop Shop in the 1970s and 1980s.

Jason’s post with his brother Paul said they were comforted “knowing that he lived life to the fullest. Knowing that life is all about daring adventure or nothing!”

“How lucky we are to have a father like you,” he added.

After moving to Australia as a teenager, Donovan began his career as a singer before making his screen career in the early 1960s.

Ten years later, he secured two of his best-known roles as Detective Mick Peters in Episode 4, followed by Detective Senior Sergeant Vic Cameron in Cop Shop.

Donovan joined the cast of Neighbors in the ’90s as Doug Willis on Neighbors, shortly after his son Jason left the show. He also appeared as Al Simpson on Home and Away.

Along with his six-decade television career, his notable film credits include roles in The Man from Snowy River and Breaker Morant, as well as numerous stage appearances.

In tribute, Jason’s father used his profile in the early 1970s to gain support for the Australian film and television industry from the US and UK.

“The result of that campaign was an obligation for commercial TV broadcasters to broadcast Australian stories,” Jason Donovan wrote alongside a picture of himself walking the streets of Melbourne under a ‘Download TV Australia’ banner.

“In the 70s and 80s when there weren’t people like my dad and implicitly Australian films like The Man From Snowy River, Breaker Morant, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Priscilla, Muriel’s Wedding, Crocodile Dundee (and) Strictly Ballroom.”
