The Flos floor lamp has an elegant design – a floating metal suspended on small metal rods. At any rate, it feels as if the frozen glass should shake, fall, and break into a thousand pieces on the ground, but there it hangs. It sounds great in any high school, where his right arm goes in to move around the edge of a chair or sofa or out of a corner to light up the room. To fit your space, choose the end of the frame and its height (either 53 or 73 inches) at the exit. $1,115 and up at dwr.com
This simple, cordless light is part of a new line of products from lighting company 3D-Gantri and design bigwigs Ammunition, the company behind Ember mug and Beat by Dre headphones. The style of the glam lamp is inspired by the nature and architecture of San Francisco, a city of all industries, nodding to the supporting stones of the bayside piers and the architectural curves of the old buildings of Chinatown. Gantri’s unique design—the lamp’s body is 3D-printed from sugarcane-based polymers, then hand-finished and painted in one of 25 bright colors—gives each light a sleek, smooth finish. It feels as good to carry as it does to have and read by its side. The cordless lamp illuminates the 8-inch tall lamp for 10 hours in addition to the battery-operated light. $348 at gantry.com
Choose Wooj lamps and table lamps, or lead the way and go straight for this cordless lamp that works anywhere. The Brooklyn-based studio designed the lamp based on the type of gourds used in West Africa to carry water and in Japan for carrying. The result is a 7 inch tall lamp that can be carried wherever you go. A paracord sling makes it easy to hang in the pantry or carry outside. Outside? Yes, the wireless lamp is powered by a USB-C-chargeable battery and can run for up to 80 hours on a single charge. There are three types of light dim-to-warm; just be aware that the run time will drop to about 15 hours on the brightest mode. On an eco note, the shade is made from recycled thermoplastic, while the base is also made from aluminium. $135 at wooj.com
Dining by candlelight is always romantic, but it may not always work. Snow Peak’s 2.4-inch ball light is designed to match outdoor candle lighting, but it’s also practical for indoors. Use one or a few Hozukis to add a little light to porches or windbreaks late at night. The magnetic clip on the top also makes it easy to hang. Connect it with a USB-C cable (the barrier is hidden under a soft silicone shade) and light up to 100 hours. It emits 60 lumens at the highest setting, which is equivalent to three or four candles. There’s even a visual effect that mimics the dreaminess of a real fire. $70 at snowpeak.com
It may not have the smoothness of more expensive lights — you’ll need two hands to turn the Edge Light 2.0’s four pivots into the right angle — but it’s hundreds of dollars cheaper. The lightweight 6-inch head tilts, so you can place it face down on your computer, then flip it to face you when you start a video call. Use the touch-sensitive buttons to adjust the color temperature, cranking it up to a daytime like 7,500K during work, then to a soft and warm 2,700K before bed. You can change the brightness with a finger slide, too. The controls are on the base, but Lume Cube sells a desk-clamp version with arm controls. $170 at lumecube.com
When you specify Humanscale’s Nova task light to illuminate a part of your workspace, you’ll be surprised at how quiet it sounds. Hold the stem and move it firmly to any desired position, allowing you to focus your arms and lighten your head. just and set without slipping, both with less time and less friction with scratches. The warm LEDs shine around the ground thanks to a light guide (similar to how the Kindle light works) that produces a soft, even light instead of a direct beam. You can rely on an infrared device to turn on the light as soon as you arrive at work and turn it off 15 minutes after you leave. Get it in black, white, or gray, and complement it with a round base, wall mount, or desk stand. $541 at humanscale.com
Soft, beautiful light—that’s what plants crave. Soltech makes beautiful home lighting, and the Aura is the latest from the company. Conceived by designer Matteo Ragni and manufactured in Turin, Italy, the Aura emits 360 degrees of brilliant light. It emits a color temperature of 3,000K, a warm, white light with a bright color that is compatible with plants while being easy on people. The globe stands more than 13 inches above the alder base, and since the lamp is designed for close-up lighting, it works best if you place it in the center or between plants that can grow best. Or, just place it next to your cool chair next to the music player and enjoy the continuous sound of the sun. $250 at Soltech.com
