NBA Playoffs: Victor Wembanyama leads San Antonio Spurs past Minnesota Timberwolves

Victor Wembanyama stars as the San Antonio Spurs take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in their Western Conference Finals win over the Minnesota Timberwolves 3-2.

Wembanyama scored 27 points – including 18 in the first quarter – to lead the Spurs to a 126-97 victory in five of the best-of-seven series.

The 22-year-old’s performance came after he was ejected the previous game for elbowing an opponent for the first time in his NBA career, although he did not receive a suspension.

A win for the Spurs on Friday in Minneapolis would set up a showdown with the Thunder – the reigning NBA champions – who completed a 4-0 sweep. of the Los Angeles Lakers.

On whether he was worried for five matches, Wembaniama said: “Very, very. I mean, I was fresh, feeling good. But to be honest, it’s hard to say.

“Of course, I’m going to be excited with the butterflies, you know. So the excitement isn’t unusual.”

Asked about Wembanyama, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said: “The one word I would use is mature.

“A lot has happened in the last 48 hours, in the last game, and I think how that young man came out tonight and was very mature in different ways, in different situations.”

The Spurs let an 18-point second-quarter lead slip as Minnesota tied the game at 61-61 four minutes into the third quarter.

But San Antonio rallied again, scoring 30 of the next 42 points to take a 91-73 lead in the final quarter — and extend that advantage.
