At the summit, Sir Kiir is expected to outline Russia’s threat to Britain and NATO.

The government says Nato has scrambled fighter jets to intercept Russian planes coming into EU airspace more than 700 times and that Russian military activity around British waters has risen by 30 per cent.

Sir Kiir stressed that while NATO does not want to clash with Russia, it must be ready to defend all its allies.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK and its allies would strengthen our collective security by striking high-value military targets and the logistical engines that drive troops.

“In Ankara, we are sending a clear message to (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin. NATO is stronger, more European and ready to defend our citizens against the long-term threat posed by him and the Russian government.”

Speaking at a summit on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Ukraine’s allies to provide air defenses to defend against escalating Russian attacks.

Ukraine has stepped up its own long-range drone and missile attacks against Russia, hitting oil refineries and military targets, causing severe fuel shortages and power outages.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on Tuesday that Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022, will closely monitor the meeting in Ankara.

Kiev says that new weapons from NATO will not prevent Russia from continuing its military operations in Ukraine until its objectives are achieved.

“In the context of the preparations for this summit, we have heard many statements about our country,” Peskov told reporters.

“To our regret, these were statements of a confrontational nature rather than statements of constructive engagement and dialogue.”

“It is still preferable to resolve this conflict through political and diplomatic means,” Peskov added.
