Nations Championship: Wales to cut squad after Barbarians win

Wales’ win was played in front of a poor crowd of under 20,000 at Twickenham but Tandy says the outing against the Barbarians was a worthwhile exercise.

He pointed to uncapped quartet Rhys Barratt, Ben Warren, Harrison Keady and Ryan Woodman’s first games for Wales and the return to the international stage after long-term injuries to Jack Morgan, Teddy Williams, Dillon Lewis and captain Dewey Lake.

“It’s great for us to get the win and there’s a lot to like about the game,” said Tandy.

“We probably could have put more distance into it in the first half, but it was a great hit-out for us.

“There’s a lot to learn and do better, but everything we wanted to go to Fiji, because it’s going to be chaotic at times.

“It’s great preparation. You can train as much as you want and the lads have worked hard, but there’s nothing to feel like the ball they’re going to put against a Barbarian team this summer.”

Although it was an uncapped game, it was Tandy’s second win in a row after the Six Nations victory over Italy in March.

But Tandy says there’s plenty of room for improvement.

“We have to be better,” Tandy said.

“We have to look at ourselves because I don’t think we are ready to focus on the big results yet.

“We need to be more consistent across the board, which this team has been fighting tirelessly to do.”

Tandy outlined what success will look like over the next three weeks at World Rugby’s new Nations Championship tournament.

“We want to build and be more consistent,” said Tandy.

“If we see more consistency in our performance, I will be very happy, because it will be closer to winning the game.”
