National Road Race Championship: Joe Backstead retains time trial title on All-Welsh podium


Jo Backstead retained her British national elite women’s time trial title, topping an all-Welsh podium at the 2026 championships in Lampeter.

21 years old, who last week won a stage of the Tour de Suisse Femmes, Covered the 15.9 mile (25.6 km) Ceredigion course in 32 minutes and 45 seconds.

“It was a great fun ride, really fast, hard in places, and good to go on classic Welsh country roads,” he said.

“I’m really proud of the way I did, it wasn’t easy, but I’m really happy to bring home the national champion jersey again.”

World track cycling champion Anna Morris, 31, finished runner-up 22 seconds back, with Backstead’s 24-year-old sister Elinor third, 1 minute 05 seconds behind the winning time.

Earlier in the day, Ben Wiggins took the under-23 men’s time trial title, with Henry Hobbs second and Finley Turling – another Welsh rider on home territory – third.

Wiggins’ winning time was 29min 02sec, Hobbs 1min 19sec slower and Turling a further three seconds behind.

The elite men’s time trial and under-23 women’s time trial races will be held later on Thursday.
