French side Nantes are in deep crisis with their Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed, who has not taken part in a single training session since the team resumed training on June 24, refusing to feature following the club’s relegation from France’s second division.
Technical director Michel Der Zakaryan revealed the extent of the crisis at a press conference on Thursday, saying: “We don’t know where he is. We call him and sometimes he doesn’t answer. It seems that he does not want to come to training. This is his fault, not ours. If he doesn’t want to come, he should stay at home.”
The 28-year-old has received daily messages from the club’s management informing him that he has been withheld from his salary, while he has completely disappeared, leaving no trace other than posts on his Instagram account.
Mustafa Mohamed, who joined the Canaries four years ago and scored 29 goals in 136 appearances, is one of the most prominent players to have claimed European Championship glory with Nantes before the team were relegated to the second division last spring. He was not invited to participate in the last World Cup with the Egyptian national team.
The crisis comes as Nantes’ summer looked positive, with most Canaries fans agreeing the signings are good for the second division, and Der Zakaryan’s return as coach showed encouraging signs in the first friendly, beating Fleury with five clean sheets, but the Egyptian forward’s story began to drag on and cause widespread discontent at the club.
