Nagelsmann’s departure leaves the door open for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to take over, should he want the job.

Germany coach Julian ⁠Nagelsmann has been asked to step down as soon as the team has started. World Cup out, the country’s football association DFB announced on Friday, saying the 38-year-old had agreed to follow talks with officials.

German newspaper Bild reported that Nagelsmann took part in a three-hour meeting at DFB headquarters in Frankfurt on Thursday where he was reportedly offered 7 million euros ($8m), roughly a year’s salary, to leave the position.

Nagelsmann will become only the second coach in German history to be forced to resign after his predecessor Hansi Flick faced the same fate in 2023.

“The decision was not easy for me,” Nagelsmann said in a statement.

“My priority is always the success of the team. After such a disappointment, it should have a chance to bounce back.”

“I’m sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we let you down and we couldn’t give you another night of action at the World Cup,” Nagelsmann added, apologizing to the fans.

Germany’s loss to Paraguay in Boston marked their third consecutive World Cup defeat. The four World Cup winners faced tough exits in Russia 2018 and in Qatar four years ago.

They have not won a knockout game or kept a clean sheet in a competition since the end of 2014, a 1-0 win against Argentina in Brazil.

Klopp ‘in talks’ for German job

Nagelsmann’s departure leaves the door open for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who is appointed by the board, to take over.

The DFB said talks would begin with Klopp, the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager, who said he was “ready” to take over as German coach.

Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024 after a successful season in which they won the Champions League and Premier League, is currently Red Bull’s head of international football but is said to have a release clause that would allow him to take the German job.

The 59-year-old is still very popular in Germany and has been working as a pundit on German TV throughout the World Cup.
