Mrs. Kemi ADB told the Prime Minister not to raise taxes to support social services.

In 2009, when Burnham was health secretary under Gordon Brown, he first proposed a universal social care system in England. As Prime Minister, he promised to invest political capital in the issue.

However, he is not the first leader to promise to solve the issue of adult social care in recent years.

In the year In 2019, in his first speech as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said the Conservative Party would “fix the crisis in social care once and for all”.

Five years later, in July 2024, Sir Keir Starmer faced criticism when Labor scrapped the £86,000 plan on how much anyone in England would need to spend on personal care over their lifetime.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, who has pushed for social care reform, said on Saturday: “This must be the start of a real effort to end the social care disaster.”

He added: “I will fight so that family caregivers are not forgotten. We need a common understanding of the parties, and I hope that the Prime Minister’s door will be open.”

Writing to Sir Ed at X, Burnham replied: “Certainly Ed. Let’s work together to find some common ground.”
