Mourinho is not happy… There is a “sounding” defensive deal at the door of “Real”.

Real Madrid continue their intense activity in the summer transfer market as the club look to complete a new high-profile deal to sign Portuguese defender Ruben Diaz from Manchester City as part of manager Jose Mourinho’s plan to strengthen the backline in preparation for next season.

According to The Athletic newspaper, Diaz is close to moving to Real Madrid after he expressed his desire to have a new experience outside the English Premier League.

The newspaper revealed that the player, who is represented by business agent Jorge Mendes, has formally asked to look into the offers that have been put to him, while City have indicated they are open to talks following the signing of young defender Herman Malonga from PSG.

Diaz joined Manchester City from Benfica in 2020 for €75 million and has since produced excellent defensive performances that have made him one of Europe’s most popular centre-backs.

However, the departure of manager Pep Guardiola this summer has prompted the player to consider ending his career in England, especially with the club’s intention to extend the contract of Croatian Guardiola as a mainstay in defence.

The deal is believed to be worth €55 million, while Real Madrid are looking to use the situation to complete the deal at a reasonable price.

Mourinho’s interest in Diaz comes after Rudiger’s contract was extended and Konate joined as the Portuguese coach believes the squad needs an additional defender with international experience and tactical stability to compensate for the lack of confidence in young Hovesen.

The potential deal is expected to result in some changes to the squad, most notably the departures of Marco Asensio and Fran Garcia, as part of the club’s plan to rebuild the squad and boost much-needed liquidity.

As negotiations enter their final phase, Real Madrid appear to be putting the finishing touches on one of the most high-profile defensive deals in the current Mercato.
