Morocco’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup played host to the Netherlands as the Atlas Lions qualified for the Round of 16 after winning 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
Less than 24 hours after the “Atlas Lions” slap, the coach of the Dutch national team, Ronald Koeman, resigned from the position he held since 2023.
The Dutch team did not perform completely convincingly in the group stage and lost the first hurdle to coach Mohamed Wehbe’s team in the knockout stages.
“Last night (Monday) I made the decision to end my coaching period with the Dutch national team. Looking back on my career, I feel a great sense of pride and gratitude. He continued in his message that he intends to temporarily retire from football to support his wife, actress Partina Coman, in her battle against breast cancer, which he announced will start in June 2024.
“The past years made me realize again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone dear to you is fighting a fierce battle, your perspective on things changes.”
He concluded. “My wife, Partina, supported me and encouraged me every day to finish my job as the coach of the national team, even though she was suffering from an illness. This is a testament to incredible strength.
