Two late goals earned Morocco a hard-fought 4-2 win over Haiti in their final Group C game, which saw them finish as runners-up.
Haiti twice led in Atlanta – including a stunning strike from Sunderland’s Wilson Isidore – but were beaten late on by the 2022 semi-finalists.
The Caribbean nation had nothing to lose either, having already headed into the game, and took a commanding lead with 10 minutes to go as Lenny Joseph finished off a brilliant team move – although it later turned into a Yassin Bounu own goal.
It took almost half an hour for Morocco to equalize as Achraf Hakimi headed home after a poor Jonny Placide save – just four minutes later for a stunning Isidore for Haiti. However, that lasted until the half until Ismail Saibari’s placed finish equalized for Morocco again before half-time.
There were fewer goals in the second half, but both were scored by Morocco. It took Soufian Rahimi until the 78th minute to score from a flick-on corner, before Gessim Yassin scored his first international goal with the Atlas Lions’ fourth. There was a VAR check on whether the ball was in play, but it was deemed to be.
It was a tough scoreline for Haiti, who gave a good account of themselves in their second World Cup. Morocco, meanwhile, will face the winners of Group F in the Round of 32. The Netherlands currently top the group, but both Japan and Sweden could still go through as group winners.
10: Goal! Joseph put Haiti ahead after a great team move.
30: Outstanding goalkeeping! Playside produced an outstanding double save to deny Hakimi and then Ayoub El Kaabi.
39: Goal! Hakimi’s bundled effort equalizes for Morocco.
43: Goal! Isidore Stunner puts Haiti behind after poor clearing from Morocco.
45: Goal! A suffocating end to the first half saw Sybari again set the finish level for the Atlas Lions.
78: Goal! Rahimi’s turn and finish put Morocco ahead for the first time.
89: Goal! Yassin scored his first international goal and added Morocco’s fourth goal. There is a VAR check to see if the ball stayed in play, which it did.
