While 19-year-old Italian Antonelli has won four races in a row, Ruhl’s only major prix win this year came in the season opener in Australia.
Russell, 28, has won races in China and Canada.
He bemoaned the series of events happening to him, saying he had no reason to feel he couldn’t bounce back – technical issues in qualifying in China, Japanese safety car intervention that handed the lead to Antonelli and problems in Canada.
“I don’t think I need to get every result because it’s a long season and if you’re at your peak during the season, it swings.
“So even though he’s the one getting the results at the moment, I have to continue to be the guy who’s coming out on top.”
Russell said his retirement in Canada “hurts” but added, “That’s the way racing goes.”
And he pointed to his own junior career as a reason to stay positive.
“In Formula 2[in 2018]I had five crashes in one year,” he said.
“I came to Monaco, I’ve never been to Monaco before, and I crashed in practice on the outside lap. And then I went into qualifying, a 15-minute session, four laps and I was nowhere near decent.
“I broke down on other occasions. The engine stopped, but he still went on to win the championship for a year.
“So I take inspiration from those moments. And I think that every year for everyone, I don’t know why and how, you have a race where everything goes your way.
“And sometimes it’s like that when things change. It’s just the mindset I have. I’m in a really good headspace. The pressure’s off now. And there’s only so much time left.”
