Monaco GP: McLaren launches appeal against Pierre Gasly penalty reversed

McLaren has lodged an appeal against a decision to overturn Alpine driver Pierre Gasly’s pit-lane speeding penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Alpine won the right to an appeal review against the penalty and the Frenchman dropped to seventh and was reinstated to third.

Board of Directors FIA Alpine hearings established that pit-lane speed limits were miscalculated in Monaco.

A statement from McLaren said: “This case raises important questions about the fairness of the sport, regulatory continuity and the integrity of competition.

“Throughout the Monaco Grand Prix weekend – and at every event – ​​all teams worked according to the regulations and established standard practices for pit lane speed limits that were in force at the time.

“Competitors adjust their procedures accordingly and, where necessary, accept and serve fines imposed under those regulations.

“In our view, the subsequent removal of the penalty creates a situation where some competitors are disadvantaged by acting according to the rules and stewards’ decisions.

“Such results undermine the sport’s disparity and undermine confidence in the consistent application of the FIA’s sporting regulations.”

The Gasly hearing proves that drivers can drive a short distance along the pit lane used to measure F1 and FIA speed limits.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastre was one of four other drivers Penalties issued for pit-lane speeding and consequently lost position.

The removal of Gasly’s penalty dropped the Australian from fourth to fifth.

McLaren’s decision to file a notice of appeal with the FIA ​​Court of Appeal takes the case to the governing body’s highest legal authority.
