Kimi Antonelli overcame a late-race restart to see Lewis Hamilton take a supreme Monaco Grand Prix victory amid wild late scenes in F1’s most famous race, extending his winning run to five races.
And with Mercedes team-mate and main title rival George Russell finishing out of the points after a late drive-through penalty compounded his troubled weekend, 19-year-old Antonelli now leads the drivers’ championship by 66 points after six races in what stands as a 22-race campaign.
Hamilton moved into second place ahead of Russell after finishing second for the second consecutive race weekend for Ferrari.
Both the Briton and team-mate Charles Leclerc initially jumped Max Verstappen – his Red Bull hit what quickly turned into a race-ending power unit problem – for second and third races, but they couldn’t keep up with the flying Antonelli, who led two late-race safety cars by more than 20 seconds.
After a crash for Lance Stroll in the final corner was soon followed by one for home hero Leclerc at the same location, officials red-flagged the race to assess track break-up issues at that point of the circuit.
The race restarted for the final eight laps with a second start from the grid, Antonelli making no mistake at the second start – this time with Hamilton on the front row – to secure his first win in F1’s most legendary race at the second attempt.
On a day when an unusually large number of drivers – including Hamilton and Russell – were handed five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly dropped to third due to two such bans applied in his final race.
It put Red Bull’s Issac Hajjar on the podium for the first time, but France’s first top-three in F1 is also in doubt due to a post-race investigation into alleged safety car violations.
A tough weekend for McLaren ended with fourth place for Oscar Piastre but a second consecutive technical retirement for last year’s race winning world champion Lando Norris.
In a great day for the Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson was fifth with British teenager Arvid Lindblad and sixth ahead of the relegated Gasly and Williams’ Alex Albon.
