Monaco GP: Kimi Antonelli tops final practice as Mercedes clears Ferrari, Oliver Biermann crashes before qualifying | F1 News

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli showed Ferrari may not have it all their own way in Monaco Grand Prix qualifying as Mercedes could overtake the pacesetters in Friday’s final practice.

After finishing the opening day’s run around the unique street circuit three-tenths of a second off the pace of a flying Ferrari, Mercedes’ apparent work to improve their W17’s set-up overnight paid immediate dividends when they returned to the track.

Antonelli, chasing a fifth straight win this weekend to extend his 43-point title lead, set an impressive time of 1:12.720 to edge out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.327s.

Leclerc’s first lap in his qualifying simulation, which would normally have been his fastest, was badly compromised by traffic in the final sector, but the Monegasque was already 0.2 seconds down on Antonelli by the end of sector two. Leclerc again struggled with the brakes of his car.

“Mercedes turned everything around,” said of Sky Sports F1 Anthony Davidson.

“Really impressive stuff from Antonelli too.”

Friday’s pacesetter Lewis Hamilton was 0.004s behind team-mate Leclerc in third, George Russell fourth in the second Mercedes as his run on the soft-tyres did not go to plan and he was 0.7s behind Antonelli.

Max Verstappen was Ferrari’s closest challenger on Friday but Red Bull struggled to stay with the leaders as the pace picked up in final practice, with the Dutchman finishing 0.9s off Antonelli’s pace and now looking much less like a pole contender.

McLaren remained the best part of a second off the pace and looked set to qualify on the best row of third with Oscar Piastre sixth and Lando Norris, whose car was fixed overnight after a technical problem stopped in P2, ninth.

An impressive Audi still ran around the off-color McLarens with Gabriel Bortoletto in seventh and Nico Hulkenberg in 10th, and the second Red Bull of Isaac Hadzer in eighth.

Several cars were caught in hairpins during the F3 sprint in Monaco!

Oliver Biermann produced a red flag in the final 15 minutes when he crashed into the barriers after going out of shape at the top of the hill at Massenet.

Bearman, who finished 14th fastest, quickly apologized to his team on the radio.

“Sorry guys. It’s bottoming! Oh my gosh,” he said, with his Haas mechanics now up against the clock to repair his car for qualifying at 3 p.m.

Franco Colapinto had earlier damaged his Alpine when he tagged the obstacles in the spin and slower-speed hairpins.
