The king of Egypt bids farewell to his companion
Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has sent an emotional message to his former team-mate Ahmed Hegazi after the international defender officially announced his retirement from football, reminiscing about the long journey that brought them together since childhood.
Salah posted a group of photos that brought him together with Hegazi at different stages of their career and attached them to a message in which he wrote on his social media pages:
Salah’s farewell to Hegazi comes after a busy football career for the Egyptian defender, which spanned more than a decade and a half, during which he played for a number of clubs inside and outside Egypt and wore the shirt of the Egyptian national team on many occasions, becoming one of the most famous Egyptian defenders of his generation.

Hegazi announced his retirement from football at the age of 35, stressing that his decision was only to end his career as a player and not to leave the game he had been associated with throughout his life.
“Today I announce that I am leaving football, but not my passion and love for it. Thank you football for every moment, every challenge, every lesson and every memory you left with me.
During his career, Hegazi played for Egypt’s Al-Ismail and Al-Ahly, Italy’s Fiorentina and Perugia, England’s West Bromwich Albion, as well as Saudi Arabia’s Ittihad Jeddah and NEOM, and managed to make a clear mark on the pitch with his defensive strength and leadership personality.
Hegazi played the final chapters of his career with NEOM Club, where he joined their ranks in the summer of 2024, coming from the Jeddah Football Association, before the club announced the end of the contractual relationship between the two parties in May last year.
Reports suggest that Hegazi could continue to work in the NEOM system for the foreseeable future and benefit from his long experience and leadership personality, given the trend of employing him in the club’s administrative or technical staff.
