Mohamed Ben Sulayem proposed removing term limits for FIA presidents

Other FIA roles currently with term limits include chair of the anti-doping committee and head of the F1 cost-cap committee.

The current three-term limit was established by Ben Sulayem’s predecessor, Jean Todd. The Frenchman succeeds Max Mosley, who served as FIA president from 1993 until agreeing not to stand again in 2009 after a dispute with the F1 team.

Asked by BBC Sport why the decision was made to scrap term limits for all positions rather than instituting them for those who currently do not have them, an FIA spokesperson was unable to give a definitive answer.

However, a spokesman pointed to the NFL in the US, saying Roger Goodell has been commissioner since 2006 and has “transformed the game into a global brand and has an outstanding governance record”.

Tim Mayer, who was barred from opposing Ben Sulayem for the FIA ​​presidency last year due to the organisation’s electoral rules, told BBC Sport: “Term limits are not a bureaucratic detail.

“They are a fundamental safeguard of good governance, recognized as essential to prevent concentration of power, to ensure renewal of leadership and to maintain accountability to those whom an organization exists to serve.”

Mayer also pointed to Bach, saying the IOC “regarded this as a key governing principle”.
