Microsoft’s new head of Xbox, Asha Sharma, has been around for the past few months to mark him on the Xbox board. After consideration The most requested Xbox console view, reduce the cost of Game Passand moving Microsoft games are back on XboxSharma is now reorganizing the Xbox platform team at Microsoft today.
These updates will see some veterans leave, get promoted, and new faces and tech support the Xbox team. Jared Palmer, who worked with Sharma in Microsoft’s CoreAI division, will join Xbox as VP of engineering and technical advisor to Sharma. In a memo to Xbox employees, seen by SeasideSharma says Palmer will work “with me directly on our most critical business and engineering challenges, focusing on product design, flavor, and construction.”
Tim Allen, former Microsoft CoreAI VP of design and GitHub’s senior VP of design and research, has rejoined Xbox to lead design. Sharma says the appointment of Allen is “the first to bring together product design, design engineering, research, and the ability to create a great experience for fans.”
Jonathan McKay, former head of development for Microsoft’s CoreAI division, has rejoined Xbox to lead its development, data platform, and analytics. Evan Chaki, former general manager at CoreAI, will join the new team at Xbox to “lead an engineering team focused on eliminating repetitive tasks, simplifying development, and improving the way we work.”
That’s a lot of people joining Xbox from Microsoft’s CoreAI team, and it looks like Sharma is bringing in his old friends to give the Xbox organization the latest platform expertise and experience with things like growth and data. There’s also a lot of AI, which is ringing alarm bells with Xbox fans, but looking at the conference there’s no AI push for Xbox yet.
In fact, last week Sharma written on X that Xbox is “refocusing our AI efforts to address player challenges such as enhancing real-time graphics, improving accessibility, and enhancing customization.” This sounds like a focus on changing the Xbox platform instead.
This leadership change at Xbox has a big impact on the teams under former Xbox President Sarah Bond. Microsoft first announced Bond’s departure in February, and has remained as a “special advisor” to Sharma to facilitate leadership transition. Many expected that Bond will be named the head of Xbox, but the head of Microsoft Satya Nadella he decided to shake Xbox management is an outsider.
As part of this new Xbox shake-up, Roanne Sones, vice president of Xbox hardware and environment, “will be taking a break this summer and will remain as a consultant.” Sones previously voiced Bond, and helped lead the launch of Xbox Ally devices.
Kevin Gammill, vice president of Xbox user companies, is stepping down after nearly 20 years at Microsoft. “He’s dedicated more than 15 years to Xbox and he’s helped make a difference,” says Sharma. “I’m grateful for his leadership and everything he’s done here.”
Jason Ronald, the group’s vice president of operations, is also being promoted as part of the changes. “For hardware, we’re upgrading Jason Ronald, a Project Helix developer, with our platform,” says Sharma. It is unclear what Ronald’s new title is. Jason Beaumont will “lead the business and become interim director,” as part of the changes.
“This is a very important time for Xbox,” says Sharma. “Our goal with this change is simple: to build an affordable, personal, and open platform by being closer to the work and people we serve.
