Michael O’Neill: Interim Blackburn Rovers boss says future decisions must be right for everyone

Interim Blackburn Rovers boss Michael O’Neill says whatever happens with his future has to be right for him, the club and Northern Ireland.

O’Neill took over until the end of the season in February and combined the role with Northern Ireland head coach duties.

He said it was last week after securing Rovers’ place in the Championship for next season Consolidating roles for long periods of time is not sustainable.

“I think it’s in everyone’s interests to get the right solution for everyone because Blackburn want to plan for next season as soon as possible,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“The conditions have to be right for all three teams, not just for the Irish Football Association and Blackburn, but for me as well.

“It has to be right for my family situation. I currently live in Scotland and it works for me to go back and forth to Belfast and mainly watch games in the north of England.

“I’m scheduled to play two games in Northern Ireland in June but equally the club here has the right, if they want, to activate the termination clause in my contract.

“I’ve had messages with people at IFA and conversations with people here and it’s all been very positive.”

O’Neill, whose contract with Northern Ireland runs until 2028, has won five of his 15 games in charge of Blackburn to lead them to safety with a game to spare.

He reaffirmed that he did not feel it was right to “celebrate” the club’s feat of keeping the division.

“I was brought here to do a job and we did it. Hopefully it was a positive but it doesn’t feel like something I should be celebrating,” he said.

“It brings a sense of relief and hopefully it gives the fanbase some hope.”

Blackburn close the season with a home game against relegated Leicester on Saturday (12:30 BST).
