Michael Carrick’s Manchester United future will soon be decided amid contract talks

The appointment of chief executive Omar Berada and director of football Jason Wilcox Carrick to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a strong indication that Ruben Amorim’s permanent replacement is now only a matter of time.

Most players have backed Carrick for the job, with most fans believing the former United and England midfielder has earned the right to be handed the role after winning 10 of his 15 Premier League games to secure next season’s Champions League qualification.

United need a point from their last two games to ensure a third-place finish.

The 44-year-old has been shortlisted for manager of the season in the top flight.

Carrick, who has confirmed that 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will be present at Old Trafford, said he intends to follow the tradition started by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and address the fans after the game.

“It’s important anyway,” he said. “The fans are a big part of this club.

“Thank you for the season, the last four months for me personally.

“Whatever that is, it’s important to thank the fans for that, for our team and the connection between the players.”
