Michael Carrick: Manchester United ready to discuss making him permanent boss | football news

Manchester United are set to hold talks with Michael Carrick about continuing as head coach beyond the end of the season.

Formal talks are expected to begin before United’s final game at Brighton on May 24.

United’s bosses have not completely ruled out the possibility of anyone else taking over for next season, and have approached other potential candidates, but the club’s hierarchy have decided that Carrick is the man they want to speak to first.

Who does Paul Merson think will finish higher next season between Liverpool and Manchester United?

The former Manchester United midfielder has been front-runners for the role for some time, with bosses impressed by his popularity with the playing squad, his handling of the media, his inherent understanding of the football club’s heritage and size – but also, crucially, the results he has achieved on the pitch.

In his 15 games in charge, he has won 10 and drawn three, and he has also guaranteed Champions League football for next season and a potential £100m boost to revenue.

So, Carrick gave everything that was asked of him and more, and in those circumstances, it was always difficult to see how United could give the job to anyone else.

Nevertheless, United are determined to have a strict recruitment process rather than a coronation, and while there has been constant dialogue between Carrick and his bosses, no formal talks have yet begun over the terms of a contract.

But it is understood that this will happen within days, and it is thought that there will be no significant difficulty for either side in reaching an agreement on the legal details.
