“We have no reason to deny them the opportunity to live in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said at his daily meeting.
Earlier, Iran had planned to play all three of its matches in the US.
But the administration of US President Donald Trump has already said that not “appropriate” for the members of the Iranian team to stay in the country, “for their safety and security”.
It has not yet been awarded to the Iranian team required visas to the US, although Trump said that the players and staff are “welcome”.
Since February 28, the US and Israel have been at war with Iran, and peace talks are difficult but ongoing.
The head of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, confirmed on Sunday that the team is preparing moving his training base from Tucson, Arizona, to the Mexican border city of Tijuana.
Taj explained that the team leaders were approved for the move after meeting FIFA officials in Istanbul, as well as holding an online conference with FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom.
Changing the team’s base in Mexico, Taj said, would help prevent that visa issuesand a group able to travel directly to Mexico on Iran Air flights.
But the US-Israel war The clash with Iran has marred the World Cup, leaving the Iranian team in disrepute.
At least 3,468 people have been killed in Iran since the war began in February, and more than 26,500 have been injured. Other people have died in the area.
The war has also caused economic problems around the world, causing the prices of oil and agricultural fertilizers, as well as other goods, to rise.
The Iranian football team has been doing very well in its region: It is currently near the top of the Asian Football Confederation. Participation in the 2026 tournament will be the fourth consecutive World Cup.
Trump, however, sent mixed messages about Iran’s presence at the World Cup, implying that in some cases Iran would have to compete. At times, he showed some conflict.
In March, for example, Politico asked Trump about Iran’s presence at the World Cup. Trump is said to have replied, “I really don’t care”, before calling Iran “a badly defeated country”.
The US, Mexico and Canada are hosting the games, with 78 games in the US alone, including the finals. It starts on June 11.
Iran is scheduled to play its first two Group G matches in Los Angeles against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, before facing Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The Trump administration’s tough approach to immigration has raised some concerns about whether the US will become a the host for fans from all over the world.
In the past, Trump has suspended visa renewals for about 75 countries, including Iran, Brazil, Colombia, Ivory Coast and Senegal, that have teams at the World Cup.
Residents of other countries, however, are not eligible for visas to enter the US for short-term visits.
On Monday, Sheinbaum explained that he had been asked by the Iranian team and FIFA officials to help him receive the players and staff.
“The United States does not want the Iranian team to sleep,” Sheinbaum said. So he asked us, ‘Can we sleep in Mexico?’ We said of course, no problem.’”
