Meta has just created a new horror for its smart glasses

Meta smart glasses have become head of PR about the company. The return of the people has been swift, and dangerous; people are concerned about the loss of privacy and the growth of surveillance. Some of the worst actors are using glasses They have filmed themselves “laughing” at strangers. Women are becoming increasingly anonymous on social media for men who are filming themselves hitting on them without them knowing. When your product is labeled as “distorted glass,” you have a problem on your hands.

Thursday, Business Insider report that Meta was taking the extraordinary step of banning some of Meta’s mirrored content from the company’s platform. Instagram CEO Adam Moseri recently said that “taking advantage of people and harassing them, like many of these types of videos,” will be removed from Instagram.

Take a moment to appreciate where Meta finds itself: Its products allowed customers to engage in inappropriate behavior so the company responded by banning the content, as if to “Stop making us look bad.”

“We don’t want people to secretly copy other people’s videos and abuse them and then post them on our platform,” Mosseri said. Business Insider. “So we’re trying to fight this as best we can.”

But it is important to think about how we got here in the first place. And a policy like this creates new questions that need to be addressed to understand what banning certain smart glasses means – and how to implement them.

We expect little privacy in public spaces – you can be the subject of someone’s Instagram Reel just by walking down the street, riding a train, or shopping in a store. The rise of this small video has given new life to the man-in-the-street style, which has proven time and time again to be cheap and unrepeatable; there are “producers” whose entire schtick is going to strangers to ask how much money they make or how much they pay in rent, or if they can name a song. Some people just take videos of strangers who have their own business; others run up to people to compliment them so enthusiastically that they get distracted – or gracefully – on camera. Being social has always meant sharing space with other people, but now we also have to look forward to being a video feed for people who will make money online.

It’s no surprise that some of the first adopters of smart glasses have been manufacturers; Stabilization is one of the main features of Meta glasses. Not everyone who uses Meta lenses to film is doing so to harass workers and women – some use the lenses to film a “day in the life”, or their meals, or concerts. But between the anodyne person and the harassment that has been banned now, there are many gray areas that have not been directly addressed by the new Instagram policy: What about the accounts that build camps for homeless people for valuable things, or silent films in public that are in constant danger? Is it considered offensive if a man takes pictures of women at the gym but doesn’t approach them? And if you appear in a recorded video without your knowledge or consent, then why ask Instagram to remove the video?

And what if someone is “secretly taking other people’s videos and harassing them,” but basically, no using smart glasses?

Meta spokesman Albert Aydin said Seaside in the email the company is working to block the cameras on the glasses when tampering is detected and delete the account information related to the devices. Aydin did not answer specific questions about whether the person who was filmed could ask Meta to remove the content; Aydin said that Meta is trying to “combat underground photography and LED interference in every way we can.” Aydin also did not give Seaside and a copy of the original plan.

The rage over smart glasses is partly due to the “deviant” users of the glasses that Meta is supposed to be criticizing – but the best models are putting people at risk. When it comes to smart glasses, it’s less about what’s being photographed than the ability to do so at all, without others noticing what’s going on. Saying that the company will show the most complex type of smart glasses but answer the deep questions, Meta is trying to have it both ways: It increases its pressure and creates the conditions for this to exist in the first place.
