The Argentina team gets to know their next World Cup opponent
Switzerland returned to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after a 72-year absence after defeating Colombia in the quarter-finals.
Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties after prevailing in a goalless draw in regular and extra time to tie them in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.
It was a competitive affair between the two teams as the game lacked dangerous chances, so regular time ended in a goalless draw before going into extra time which ended in the same result before matters were settled on penalties.
Thus, the Swiss national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time after an absence of 72 years, particularly since the tournament held on its soil in 1954, before the defeat against Austria.
In the quarter-finals, the Swiss team had a heated match against their Argentinian counterpart, led by Lionel Messi, at the Kansas City stadium at dawn next Sunday, after a 3-2 victory over Egypt in the round of 16.
It is noteworthy that the Swiss team is the eighth and the last team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup, after the teams of Morocco, France, England, Norway, Spain, Belgium and Argentina.
