Lionel Messi, the captain of the Argentine national team, confirmed that what his country has achieved in recent years is “not normal”. Qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
The Spanish “Marca” newspaper reports.Messi expressed his delight at qualifying for the semi-finals after Argentina suffered a loss against Switzerland before progressing. “This group never stops making history and never gets tired of striving for more.”
Messi spoke about his partner Julián Alvarez, saying: “He scored a great goal, but not for the first time. He scored many goals this way. The truth is, it was a great goal. He’s got a great shot and he’s proven it, and he’s been doing it for a very long time. With Atletico Madrid, he scored many similar goals this season. We needed both to score like this, so I’m very happy with everything.”
Messi added about reaching the semi-finals again. “I’ve said it many times. This group is always competing and never stops pushing or wanting to achieve more and continues to prove that they are at the level of the best teams. As I said before, what this group has achieved is not normal. To become a world champion, to win the Copa America and then to return to four teams is not common.
“We have to enjoy what we experience, as the audience enjoys, so do we. We will compete again, as always, against a great team and a footballing force, and we will try to rest a bit and get as well prepared as possible.”
