Memorial Tournament: Rory McIlroy and Scotty Scheffler struggle to lead JT Poston after second round | golf news

JT Poston made light work of tough, windy conditions to take a one-shot lead at the Memorial Tournament as the world’s top two Rory McIlroy and Scotty Scheffler battled it out.

McIlroy had no form on the fast putting surfaces as he signed off his second round with a 74, which included three bogeys and a double-bogey, and took five shots to drop from 112 yards to the par-four 13th.

The Northern Irishman’s chances of getting back into contention appear slim as he is 10 strokes behind Poston, as Scheffler admitted he “could have shot 90” after a level-par 72.

Rory McIlroy survived the 11th after the ball bounced off the fairway and hit a tree, but landed in front of the gate and remained in play.

Poston’s seven-under round of 65 was four shots better than any other player in the field at Muirfield Village in Ohio.

Joint first-round leader Tommy Fleetwood fell back with a 73, dropping five off the lead to fourth.

“It was pretty brutal, actually. I still think I got a good score today. I bogeyed one and six, where I didn’t really think I did anything wrong,” he said.

Scheffler’s bid to win for the third year in a row is alive thanks to three birdies in his last six holes that recorded three consecutive bogeys from the eighth and escaped with a par after a scramble from a bunker at the fifth.

“Overall it was a tough day, I felt I could have done 90. I can be a lot but I’m not one to give up,” he said.

“It’s probably the worst I’ve hit out there in years and I’m still able to shoot par around a golf course that you have to hit really well.”

Scotty Scheffler and caddy Ted Scott have a heated exchange after finding water off the tee shot at the Memorial Tournament on the 16th.

US PGA champion Aaron Rye and fellow Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick are tied for ninth after rounds of 70 and 71, along with Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who had five birdies but a pair of double bogeys and two bogeys in his 73.
