But in his new role as head of OpenAI’s core product, Sottiaux will be tasked with thinking about what the average person wants from AI — not what his fellow engineers want.
In fact, I expect OpenAI’s advanced software to be a digital assistant with advanced memory capabilities. It could be, say, making dinner reservations, and reminding you later to avoid things that have allergens, or things that upset your stomach last time. The platform can also help automate tasks, such as filing financial reports ahead of time.
Under the hood, Sottiaux says the advanced software will be powered by Codex, which is already seeing strong growth with non-tech users. To complete a task, the agent can write application code, make API calls, or browse the web, but the user can’t see anything. They just ask for things in plain language – or, that’s how it should be.
Sottiaux says building a high-quality app also involved turning Codex into a common agent, and integrating the system into ChatGPT. As OpenAI closed some channels, Sottiaux says the project gained momentum, even though the main group is still small. He declined to say how many people are using the advanced software, but his Codex team had about 40 people two months ago.
This is not the first time that OpenAI has tried to turn ChatGPT into an agent. Last year, the company introduced the Operatora tool within ChatGPT that attempts to browse the web on behalf of the user. Finally morphed into being ChatGPT supporterbut there is no cure he saw a great establishment. Sottiaux says the experiments were “too early” — the models that supported them weren’t reliable, so OpenAI had to limit what they could do. Now, he says, the technology is there.
Another problem with OpenAI providers was that consumers didn’t know what to do with them. While developers have proven to be adept at using assistants to perform a variety of tasks, teaching people to use ChatGPT in new ways may be a big part of Sottiaux’s challenge.
At first, maybe it’s a small thing we can do for you, and then more and more, have confidence that ChatGPT can do bigger and bigger things,” says Sottiaux. “Maybe you start teaching your friends, colleagues, and family this new skill you’ve found in ChatGPT. And then the ChatGPT model has a role to play there, almost as a mentor.”
Sottiaux wouldn’t say when the advanced program would arrive, other than “soon.” But he said that “most of what will be available to everyone in ChatGPT is already in Codex software,” and OpenAI has it. has already said that it plans to integrate Codex into ChatGPT in the coming weeks. Sottiaux adds that OpenAI often likes to make small releases so it can find solutions as it goes, in part because the AI space moves so quickly that “you can’t afford to do a big bang and make a mistake.”
Millions of people in China and other countries have been using advanced software to do everything online for years. OpenAI is offering a different vision, in part because they have no other choice.
WeChat and Alipay have become ubiquitous in building the financial and information infrastructure that modern China operates on. Countries like the US, on the other hand, already have Gmail and Instagram accounts, credit cards, and Venmo. As a result, OpenAI’s advanced software must find ways to integrate existing systems.
