McGregor and Holloway are both former champions in the UFC but took very different paths to get to that point.
Ireland’s McGregor signed with the UFC in 2013 as a featherweight and won seven straight fights to become the unified champion.
The 37-year-old made history when he won the lightweight title after three fights – becoming the UFC’s first simultaneous double champion.
McGregor has won and lost 10 of his four bouts in the UFC, ending in losses in three of his past four trips to the Octagon.
Holloway lost in his debut in 2012 and went 17 fights to capture the featherweight title and establish himself as one of the best to compete in the division.
The 34-year-old has won 23 and lost nine of his 32 bouts in the UFC, including a loss to McGregor in 2013, and has competed in eight title fights.
As well as previously holding the featherweight belt, Holloway also held the symbolic BMF title – awarded to the ‘baddest’ fighter in the UFC.
Holloway will make his welterweight debut in a weight class McGregor has competed in twice before, defeating Donald Cerrone and losing to Nate Diaz.
Both men favor the head when striking, with 70% of McGregor’s strikes landing there and Holloway’s 65%.
McGregor built a reputation for finishing fights the distance with only 7% of his bouts going to decisions, although it should be noted that he was inactive for five years.
Holloway, meanwhile, doesn’t boast a great finishing rate with 56% of his fights going the distance.
