Mbappe admits. We didn’t carry out Deschamps’ plan… and we couldn’t hurt Spain

Kylian Mbappe, captain of the French national team, commented on the Roosters’ failure to reach the finals of the World Cup after losing to Spain with two unanswered goals.

Mbappe said in published statements AS newspaper “We didn’t execute the game plan that we had, not tactically, not technically, not even in terms of the overall level we showed.”

He added: “When you don’t do what you have to do in the semi-finals of the World Cup, you don’t win.”

He continued. “Spain have stuck to their style of play, which always makes them stand out. This is a team that likes to dominate the ball and dictate the pace of the game.”

He pointed out. “Our goal was to put pressure on them in their own areas to prevent them from forcing their rhythm, but we couldn’t do that. We made a lot of technical mistakes and didn’t know how to hurt them when we needed to.”

Mbappe said: “We let them control the tempo of the game and it was up to us to change the balance of power, but we didn’t manage to do that. From the start and the way we pressed, we found ourselves in a three-on-two situation in midfield, and against Spain that becomes a difficult task.”

“Fabian Ruiz and Rodri had a lot of time to build up the game and there were communication problems during the pressing. We had to play one-on-one and make them run with us because they are a team that don’t like to run without the ball. Even when we recovered the ball, the quality of the first passes and first touches was not at the desired level.”

He explained. “I am very disappointed. Our dream was to reach the finals and give our country a chance to dream and make history. Now we have to deal with this matter with our heads held high.”

He concluded. “There is a great disappointment that I cannot describe in words. We need to recover, rest a bit over the holidays and then move on. Football waits for no one and there are other challenges that will be there, be it with the clubs or the national team.
