Matt Beard: The family is asking for a mental health examination of the executor after the death

Matt’s family say he often struggled emotionally to get away from football and the negative comments on social media began to affect his mental health.

Debbie said breaking the news to the players is especially emotional about their place on the team or their future plans.

“Matt always felt bad about letting someone down,” she explained. “There may be tears, maybe yelled at, and the player’s family and fans may sometimes be negative towards him.

“He and other colleagues were making decisions, but because he had to spread the news, all the emotional burden fell on him.

“Matt was there for everyone and hated letting people down. He looked after everyone but unfortunately not himself.”

In the summer leading up to his death, Matt was third in charge as Burnley manager.

But Matt’s family said he was unhappy with the way the club was run. WSL club Leicester City have announced their interest in signing Matt.

Burnley have rejected an offer from Leicester to buy out the remainder of Matt’s contract, BBC Sport understands. After that, Matt resigned, but the transfer to Leicester never came.

Burnley put Matt on gardening leave, meaning he could not work or talk to other clubs for three months.

Burnley Matt declined a request for comment from BBC Sport on the nature of his departure from the club.

At a preliminary hearing last week, Debbie Bernlein Matt. The investigation has been adjourned indefinitely.

Burnley said they are “aware of ongoing legal proceedings and have no further comment at this time”.

Debbie believes Matt’s inability to work contributed to his mental deterioration.

“He wasn’t allowed to say goodbye to the players or tell them why he was leaving,” Debbie said. “It had a huge impact on him.

“He was[stressing]about how to manage his family. I was working three jobs to get by.”

“I think it felt like a bit of a failure.”
