Matias Alemanno: Argentina locked in 12 men leaving Gloucester

Argentine lock Matias Alemanno will leave Gloucester this summer, the Prem club have announced.

The 34-year-old has made 99 appearances for the Kingshome side and is one of 12 first-team players from George Skivington’s squad ahead of next season.

“Matty has been incredible since I brought him in at the start of the process,” head coach Skivington told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

“I have a lot of admiration for Matty, he’s a decent fighter. He’s been nothing but positive here, he’s never cried once, he does what’s best for the team – he just gets on with it.

“He’s an incredible character – although he knows he won’t be here next season like anyone else. It will be a sad day when we have to say goodbye to him.”

Joining Alemanno on the leave list is prop Kirill Gotovtsev, who will retire in 2021 after 87 appearances for the cherry and whites since joining.

“Kyril is a brilliant character, and brings so much laughter and friendship to the building,” Skivington said.

“He was honest about slowing down his body. Six or seven months ago he told me it was the end of the ride, but he was brilliant around the place.”

Previously announced departures include Tomos Williams (Saracens), Hugh Bokenham (Cornish pirates), and Cam Jordan (Newcastle)

“Tomos has a highlight reel that will live long in the Gloucester memory,” said Skivington.

“He was box-office stuff last season – he’s a world-class player. I’m sure we’ll welcome him back in his own way when he comes back.

“Cam feels Newcastle will give him more opportunities than us and he’s one of those guys you can only wish the best for.”

Academy graduate Jake Morris also left after more than five seasons of service.

“Jack has been a loyal servant of the club – he’s been going into training, he’s been training hard to play for Gloucester to emulate what his dad (Simon Morris) did. He’ll always be welcome here,” added Skivington.

Josh Basham, Jono Benz-Salomon, Will Butler, Nepo Laulala, Archie McArthur and Rob Russell complete the list of departed first team players.

In addition, the club confirmed the departures of academy players George Dufty, Ollie Minnis, Dan O’Reilly, Rhys Price, Dan Owen, Pete Parramore, Rio Ebanks and Freddie Stevens.

“I would like to thank every player who is leaving the club for their commitment and contribution during their time at Kingsholm,” said Skivington.

“They all played their part, whether it was over several seasons or a short period of time, and they leave with our best wishes for the future.

“It’s always a difficult time to say goodbye, especially to those who have been with us for a number of years, and I know our supporters will join us in thanking them for everything they’ve given to the Cherry and White.”
