Leeds strengthened their position at the top of the Betfred Super League after another crushing victory over defending champions Hull KR at Headingley.

Eight days after thrashing fellow title rivals Warrington by the same margin, Brad Arthur’s men turned on the style to sink the Robins 34-8 as Jack Connor helped himself to an 18-point individual run.

Coupled with another brace from Micah Sivo, it added a strong statement of intent from the hosts who heaped more misery on their opponents after their 58-6 demolition in their last meeting in Las Vegas in February.

Playing in front of their biggest Super League crowd in six years, it felt doubly poignant as Rhinos paid tribute to last grand final winner Rob Barrow before kick-off as part of the club’s MND awareness fixture.

“We talked earlier in the week about being brave for Rob and his family, and I thought we were extremely brave tonight,” Arthur said.

“We really dominated the scrum – they stuck into it and we resisted it and pushed the other way. We did a few dumb things at times but it made us exciting to watch and difficult to defend against.

“I still think there’s a lot of room for improvement, but we have to be happy with that. We rolled up our sleeves and made tough choices about our effort and our physicality. It was important tonight that we reflected on Rob and his family because they are brave people.”

Rovers were second best for much of the first half, but it was an unforced error from Mikey Lewis just past the half-hour mark that helped swing the tie wide in Leeds’ favour.

The kick fell short to Lewis’ touch and was acrobatically put into play by Conner, who moments later delivered a neat kick through which Chris Hankinson scored the first try of the game.

Until that moment Rovers had rallied in the face of increasing adversity which began in the opening six minutes when front row duo Dean Hadley and Tom Ammon were forced to undergo an assessment following a clash of heads.

Amon eventually returned to help ease the pressure on the Rovers line, with former Rhino Rice disallowing Martin Connor’s early penalty as referee Chris Kendall struggled to contain the temper.

Civo was denied a trademark try by a brilliant saving tackle from Tevita Pangai Junior, then Martin stopped James McDonnell as the Rovers line crashed to a repeat set.

Connor’s second kick spurred Leeds forward and set them up for a stirring finishing half, with Civo joining Chris Hankinson’s effort when Connor’s deflected pass conveniently fell into his hands.

It meant Civo scored his club record-equalling ninth consecutive Super League game, scoring his 26th try of the season – already surpassing Hull FC’s Lewis Martin’s top score of 25 last season.

To add to Rovers’ woes, Connor took his first-half tally to double figures and Martin was sin-binned in the stroke of the interval.

The visitors were under pressure again at the start of the second half and moments after Danny Levy was denied Rhinos’ third by the tightest of margins, Sivo broke into Peta Hiku and slotted home his second.

Rovers showed signs of fighting back when Noah Booth headed over in the corner, but Connor capped another fine individual performance when he strode over for Leeds’ fourth try just before the hour mark after the Rovers defense went wide in anticipation of a Civo hat-trick.

Connor limped over after helping Ash Handley score a fifth Leeds try, but their fifth Super League win was long gone and dusted.

York scored three second-half tries as they came from behind to beat Castleford 20-14.

The Knights took an early lead when Semi Valemei crossed in the corner but the hosts went ahead when Cody Hunter crashed over from close range for an own-converted try at the Wanbour Stadium.

Castleford extended their advantage to 10-6 before the interval when Jason Karrekare – earlier on the receiving end of a crusher tackle from Sam Wood, who was sin-binned – scored wide. Tom Weaver converted.

York rallied after the break and put their pressure on when Ollie Field got down to level the scores and David Nofoaluma forced another way over just after the hour mark.

The Knights took a decisive lead when Scott Galliano pounced after Karekar failed to claim a high kick.

Valemei latched on to a hard bouncing ball to give the Tigers late hope to score his second, Hunter converted again, but Karekar’s last-gasp effort in the corner was ruled out.

Karrekare was awarded a penalty for a high tackle after losing the ball while diving for the line, but it was not enough to prevent the Tigers slipping to defeat.
