Mason Mount is aiming for Premier League title glory at Man United

Manchester United have the ability and mentality to win the Premier League next season, says midfielder Mason Mount.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge saw United last win the title for 13 years.

The team finished 15th last season but a win over Liverpool on Sunday would ensure the return of Champions League football to Old Trafford.

And Mount, 27, already has an eye on the next campaign – and feels the 13-year title drought should be the goal.

“I’ve already won the Champions League, so I’m aiming to win the Premier League,” he said. “Can we do that? Yes, I think we can.

“It might seem a bit far-fetched, but you have to have that mindset to push yourself as a group.

“We’ve already shown what we can do against big teams; Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, so we’ve done it.

“Now it’s about doing it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and doing it more consistently in the Premier League.

“Hopefully, I’ll be a big part of next season going forward. That’s one goal: I want to win the Premier League.”

There has been chatter over Mount’s position at Old Trafford.

He has featured in 20 of United’s 34 Premier League games, but has started just 10 since the win over Newcastle on 26 December and not one.

While Ruben Amorim seems ideally suited to one of the number 10 roles in the formation, it seems less clear where Mount could be most effective for Michael Carrick.

Although Carrick praised Mount, and the former Chelsea man, who felt he was close to an England recall under Thomas Tuchel until a niggling injury limited his appearances, is confident he can play a key role in United’s honors next season.

“I will always give back,” he said. “I know what I’m about and what I can bring.

“I love being part of a big club. This is my third season and it has flown by.

“I’m a bit older now and I’ve got a bit more experience. There’s going to be a lot more games next season. To be a part of getting this club back to the top, where it deserves to be, is very special.”

“I tasted some wins with the club in the FA Cup. It was unbelievable. To do a Premier League? I can’t even imagine how special that would be.”

Mount was speaking less than 24 hours after helping United secure a home win over Brentford as they need two points from their remaining four games to return to Europe’s elite club competition.

He was at St George’s Park at a two-day Make a Wish Foundation event he funded, leading a team of seriously ill children to a 32-2 victory over a team of Premier League mascots.

The England star said he “loved” the experience and hasn’t ruled out becoming a full-time boss himself one day.

For now, though, he’s completely focused on the game.
