Marine Le Pen is to run for president of France and appeal at the Supreme Court.

France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen has appealed to the country’s highest court against corruption charges that would force her to wear an electronic tag for a year as she says she will run for president in 2027.

She told French TV: “I can’t campaign with a label. I want to follow all the legal means to defend my innocence in this case.”

Hours earlier, a Paris appeals court ruled that she had misused €2.8m (£2.4m) of EU funds in a bogus jobs scheme but was allowed to run for president wearing a label.

She will now take the case to France’s highest civil court.

The decision ended months of speculation that Le Pen would hand over the nomination to 30-year-old National Rally Party president Jordan Bardela.

“No, no, I’m going to tell you tonight that I’m a candidate for the 2027 election,” she said when asked if there was any chance she would run without contesting.
