Marcus North: Australian to be named England selector.

North will be joined by head coach Brendon McCullum, cricketer Rob Key and Test and limited-overs captains – Stokes and Harry Brook – with limited input on the final XI in selecting the England teams. Director of Operations Ed Barney and Head of Player Accounts David Court participated in the selection.

North’s brief includes attending selection for the England Lions, liaising with counties and leading a scout team.

Under McCullum, England will ignore players proven in county cricket in favor of players they believe have the character for international cricket. Perhaps it was the role of the North to provide a balance to British tactics.

His involvement in the selection process for the first Test against New Zealand, starting at Lord’s on June 4, is likely to be limited.

The squad is set to be named in the week starting May 18, with England’s training camp in Loughborough starting on May 25.

Stokes will be looking for a new opener to replace Zach Crawley after the heavy defeat in Australia.

Durham’s Emilio Gay and Somerset’s James Rew will be the frontrunners, and both could be called up in the squad for the first Test.

The identity of England’s front-line spinner and seamer will also be up for discussion to join the fast bowling department.

In April, about 80 candidates applied for the selector job. These were then eliminated in the first interviews, leading to the final interviews.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has invited applications and said it is looking for “high professional experience and intimate knowledge of international and first-class cricket, including knowledge of junior players and county networks”.

The ECB added that applicants should have “experience in communicating talent identification”, “strong understanding of data and analytics in cricket” and “ability to manage relationships with cricketers at international and county level”.
