“…Don’t compare aliens with humans.”
Ahead of tonight’s highly-anticipated World Cup 2026 final, the son of the late Argentine legend Diego Maradona Jr has spoken out strongly on the most controversial subject of all time, stressing that any comparisons between his late father and Lionel Messi are completely unwarranted.
Speaking about the main strengths of the current Argentina team, Maradona Jr. emphasized the collective spirit that pushed the team to reach the World Cup finals for the second time in a row.
He said, according to the website Football Italy“There’s no doubt that this is a great team and when its leader is fully focused, he makes the difference.”
He continued. “They made it to the finals thanks to their strong character, dedication and burning desire to win. That is true regardless of the extent of Messi’s contribution, although he certainly played a key role throughout the tournament.”
However, when asked about the constant comparisons between Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi that dominated press coverage of the tournament, Maradona Jr. did not hesitate to dismiss the controversy outright.
He emphasized. “With all due respect, anyone who makes such a comparison is a very stupid person.”
“First, even Messi himself admitted that this comparison was inappropriate because Diego is number one. Second, football as a sport has changed radically. How can you compare a player who competed in an era where virtually anything was allowed on the field; third, you just can’t compare aliens to humans.”
Tonight, Messi will take to the field with a historic opportunity to win back-to-back World Cup titles, a feat not even the great Diego Maradona could achieve after his 1986 triumph.
However, according to his son, this unprecedented achievement, even if achieved, will not change the historical ranking between these two icons.
Maradona Jr. concluded by saying that Messi winning a second consecutive World Cup “will make him a more important figure for the country, but in the context of this comparison, he can win the World Cup 10 times and it won’t change anything.”
