Crowds lined the streets of the holy city of Mashad for the funeral of late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
It was Khamenei. He was buried at the Imam Reza Shrine, Iran’s holiest site for Shiite Muslims, at the end of six days of public mourning in five cities in Iran and neighboring Iraq.

His son Mojtaba, who has not been seen in public since he was reported to have been seriously injured in the same attack, was appointed as the supreme leader.
The 56-year-old did not attend the funerals in Tehran and Qom, and there is no indication that he attended the funeral.
On Thursday morning, a plane carrying the coffins of Ali Khamenei, his grandson, son-in-law, daughter and Mojtaba’s wife landed in Mashhad after taking off from Iraq.
In the afternoon, Iranian television footage showed thousands of black-clad mourners marching down the main boulevard in central Mashhad. Many waved Iranian flags and red banners symbolizing revenge.
Some people held up pictures and placards of the cleric calling for the death of US President Donald Trump, who sparked the war with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu four months ago and ordered a joint strike against Iran.
Hanging above the boulevard were banners with the official slogan “We must rise.”
“Losing the leader is more difficult than losing our parents,” Hoda, a 35-year-old housewife, told AFP news agency. Only the death of Trump and Netanyahu will soothe our pain.
Later, a lorry slowly carried Kamini’s coffin through the crowd to Imam Reza’s shrine, finally reaching the compound as dusk fell.
Imam Reza is the eighth Shia Imam and the only one of the 12 to be buried in Iran. The mausoleum, built in the 9th century and with its towering golden dome and minarets, is visited by millions of pilgrims every year.
