Others carried signs with pictures of US Vice President JD Vance, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the words: “There will be blood.”

The head of the Iranian army, Major General Amir Hatami, promised that he would not stop seeking justice.

“Those who committed this crime should know that Iran and all of us will not stop seeking justice,” Hatami said, according to Iran’s Press TV.

“The killers (of Khamenei) must be punished,” a 38-year-old man who gave his name only as Miremadi told AFP at a prayer service on Sunday.

Khamenei has long tried to fight the West. Tehran has for years supported anti-US and anti-Israeli groups operating in the Middle East, including the Palestinian group Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which sent delegates to the ceremonies.
