Man Utd secure land deal for major new stadium development

Multiple sources have told BBC Sport that the multi-billion pound masterplan can only be changed by the government, regardless of which party Burnham’s successor as mayor comes from.

“Today’s news highlights the progress we are making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development,” said Colette Roche, chief executive of Manchester United’s new stadium development.

“Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans. We are committed to creating a world-class stadium with our supporters, not just for them, but with atmosphere, affordability and accessibility at the heart of our thinking.

“This is a generational opportunity that fully aligns with both local and national ambitions. Securing the right land for our new home is absolutely vital.”

While some skeptics have questioned whether Ratcliffe’s vision – which some have called a circus tent – will become a reality, United officials remain confident.

However, they did not agree to tell the price of the land or where the money came from.

The club confirmed on 12 June that they were $550m (£415.35m) in funding secured To settle bonds worth $425m (£320.95m) which were due to mature in June 2027.

It is not known whether any of that additional capital was used in this transaction.

United have confirmed they have acquired the land from Indurant, a leading provider of industrial space and a Blackstone portfolio company, but it is not known whether it is the same land in the Trafford Park area Blackstone spent between £275-280m in 2023.

United believe their chosen site will provide greater opportunities for stops on the city’s Metrolink system and, in addition, the extensive rail network, which will help ferry supporters to what will become England’s largest stadium.

How the plans fit into the wider MDC should be known on July 9, when the draft masterplan for the area is unveiled at Old Trafford.
