Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has strongly defended his character and achievements as he accused Roy Keane of “lying” about his pursuit of the Premier League assists record.
Fernandes said Keane had put untruths “in my mouth” in a recent podcast appearance and he hopes to contact the United legend to set him straight.
Keane described Fernandez as being at the center of a “circus act” after United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on the final weekend of the season.
He suggested that the Portugal international was prioritizing personal glory over team interests in his quest to set the single-season record.
Speaking on podcast The Overlap, Keane said: “He was interviewed after the (Forrest) game and he said, the Manchester United captain said: ‘A couple of times, I probably should have shot but I passed them.’ wow How can a footballer be in your mindset going into a match about a personal record?
“He won’t win trophies, not with that team mentality.”
Fernández’s actual post-match comments were: “Today there were probably moments when I should have passed instead of shot. I’m very happy for the assist, but more than that, I’m happy for the win and to end the season on a high.”
Former Republic of Ireland and United captain Keane appears to have misinterpreted Fernandes’ comments rather than distorting the truth.
Fernandez registered a record-equalling 20th assist of the season in United’s win over Forest, and then took the record outright in the final day win at Brighton.
This surpassed the mark set by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne for Fernandes.
His anger at Kane’s comments was evident when he said on the podcast The Diary of a CEO: “Like I’ve always said, I don’t mind criticism. I’ve always taken criticism from everyone and anyone and I never take anything back.
“People have an opinion; they think it’s good, bad, whatever. What I don’t like is when people lie about things, and (in this case) what you said about Roy Keane is basically what he said because … either he saw another interview or he can’t tell that I said something that I didn’t say, and luckily for me it’s all on the record.
“I accept his criticism, I accept whether he likes me as a player or not, likes me as a person or not. But what I don’t like is when he puts things in my mouth that haven’t been said. That’s the only thing I don’t like.”
Fernandes is not the first player in the current squad to disapprove of the United great.
Earlier this season, Lisandro Martinez got into a fight After Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt commented on Erling Haaland’s height and ability to compete in the Manchester derby.
