June 2025 direct attack on Israeli hostages in Gaza; Supporters say the criminal family is targeted unfairly.

Mohamed Soliman, who is accused of attacking a protest gathered in support of Israeli captives in Gaza in Colorado, has pleaded guilty to murder.

The request on Thursday was accompanied by a new call from US President Donald Trump to stop the effort chasing the Soliman familywhich the government officials said they did not already know about this attack which they strongly opposed.

The family was the longest-serving immigrant in US immigration detention during Trump’s second term before being released in late April. The government has promised to continue deporting people in the country.

Mr. Soliman faced more than 100 charges related to the June 2025 attack. The video showed him throwing Molotov cocktails at demonstrators gathered in Boulder, Colorado. An 82-year-old woman, Karen Diamond, died from injuries sustained during the attack.

A 46-year-old Egyptian national pleaded guilty to two charges in connection with Diamond’s death. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

He has also been charged with federal criminal mischief.

In a statement read out in court by the public prosecutor, Diamond’s sons asked that Soliman not be allowed to see his family again “because he is the one responsible for our mother never seeing her family again”.

Andrew and Ethan Diamond said their mother had been in “excruciating pain” for more than three weeks before she died.

“During those weeks, we learned the full meaning of the words that living in hell is a fate worse than death,” Diamond’s sons said in the statement.

The family is trapped

Following the attack, the White House vowed to deport Soliman’s wife, Hayam El Gamal, and their five children, ages five to 18. Lawmakers and community groups have criticized the effort as sectarian punishment.

The family has strongly condemned the attack and denied knowing it was going to happen, El Gamal divorced her husband soon after it happened.

An FBI agent testified under oath that there was no evidence that the couple, who have not been charged, knew about the father’s plans.

After spending 10 months in jail in Dilley, Texas, a judge ordered the family released at the end of April.

However, they were arrested again during an ICE raid soon after, which their lawyer, Eric Lee, called “theft”. The couple were released from their plane after being ordered by a judge.

In a statement to Al Jazeera in April, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said the “terrorist family” had been ordered by a “disgusting judge”. The statement said the organization “will continue to fight for the right to remove people who do not have the right to live in our country – especially criminals and their associates”.

Several community groups and lawmakers in the Boulder area signed a petition urging immigration officials to stop tracking the family.

“They are here,” he said, “and with a clear and united voice, we are asking the federal immigration authorities to stop harassing this family and leave them and all of our communities in peace.”
