Man, 28 Ann Widdecombe on trial for murder

In a statement read outside New Scotland Yard, Lawrence Taylor, the head of the UK’s counter-terrorism police, said: “I want to make clear that our investigation into (Kerry) is continuing to determine his motivations and any wider activities he may have been involved in.”

“As with any homicide investigation, understanding the ‘why’ is a key part of our inquiries,” he said, adding that it is “a particularly intensive and complex investigation.”

Taylor said detectives are still not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

He added that counter-terrorist teams had gathered a “massive amount of information” last week and received more than 800 lines of inquiry.

The ongoing investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing South East, supported by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Frank Ferguson, of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime and Terrorism Unit, said: “Our prosecutors have worked closely with the police to ensure there is enough evidence to bring this case to court and we will continue to work with them as their investigation progresses.”

“We remind all concerned that the defendant’s trial is active and he is entitled to a fair trial,” Ferguson said.

“It is important that no report, opinion or information is shared which would in any way prejudice these processes.”

Widdecombe’s career in politics spanned decades.

She served as Conservative MP for Maidstone in Kent for 23 years and was appointed to a ministerial role in Sir John Major’s government in the 1990s.

Following her resignation from the Commons, Widdecombe appeared on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and was a runner-up on Celebrity Big Brother eight years later.

She later became a Brexit Party Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing the South West of England and joined Reform 2023 UK as a party spokesperson.

Days after Widdecombe’s death, mourners gathered in Haytor Vale to remember the 78-year-old.
