Los Angeles 2028: Canoeing couples together to chase Olympic dreams

Their relationship transcends sports but they share the goal of qualifying for the Olympics together in 2028.

Jack has been down this path before, narrowly missing out on an Irish indoor race-off in the C1 event at the Paris Games two years ago.

“I would say Tokyo (the 2021 Olympics), I was on the edge of being in it then. I felt like I had an outside chance,” he said.

“Then Paris was what I was really pushing for and I was quite disappointed that I didn’t make it then.

“In terms of keeping going, I would say, the love of the sport. It’s hard to describe. Being on the water, training every day, it’s a really fun way to spend your life.”

He added: “Seeing the improvement in results outside of the Olympics, making multiple World Cup finals in the last few years and seeing that progression, it makes me hungry to make it to that big stage at the Olympics.

“I’m pretty pumped for the next two years and a way to take it forward that’s kind of nice now that we’re hopefully going to do it together. It’s really exciting.”

Ginny’s move from Australia to Ireland was completed earlier this year and he recently made his debut on the World Cup circuit for his adopted country.

“I didn’t dream of the Olympics. I dreamed of the World Cup and the World Championships and it was really last year that I started to dream of that again. That dream ended just by doing it with Jake,” she said.

“I watched Jack’s 2024 Olympic selection, and, like, it was an inch. That was it. It was an inch. I saw him throw this amazing run thinking he was going to do it and then saw him throw his head back and miss the gate by an inch.

“The frustration is heightened because I’m disappointed for him. He’s disappointed for her. So I’m really hoping that the excitement will be even higher next time.”

The Olympic qualification window opens in July with the World Championships at the 2028 venue in Oklahoma City.

There will be nine events over a 15-month period with the best five results counting. The top 10 countries in the C1 event at the Jake will qualify for the Games.

Genie will compete in both the C1 and K1 events which require top 10 and top six finishes respectively. He will also offer kayak-cross as well.

Further places at the Games will be allocated to the European Championships and the final global qualification event in 2028.

“I’m so excited to do this with Jack. I just think we’ve trained so hard this winter, and I can’t wait to see what you do and I hope I can do the same,” Jenny said.

Jack added: “I think it’s not the pressure to succeed, it kind of feels, but I think OK, if things don’t go my way, does it matter too much? Like, we have an exciting life ahead of us outside of sport.

“Even if it goes our way, it’s exciting to look at that qualification system for the next two years and give it our best shot.”
