Gary Neville says he would be “furious” at Mo Salah’s comments about Liverpool’s season if the Egyptian was a Man Utd player.

The Liverpool star is set to leave the club this summer but provided a brutal assessment of the team’s current state on Saturday, with the Reds fifth in the Premier League and yet to secure a place in next season’s Champions League after losing 4-2 to Aston Villa on Friday.

Salah hit out at Arne Slott’s style of play, calling for a return to the “heavy metal” attacking football synonymous with former boss Jurgen Klopp.

Salah is not the first to criticize Liverpool’s head coach this season.

Sky Sports Pundit and former Man Utd captain Neville said he did not approve of Salah speaking in such a way, but said his recent comments reflected his displeasure.

“He pulled the pin out of a grenade right in the middle of the room. And he’s walking out of the room,” Neville said. “Mo is not happy there.

“It’s not great. If he was a Manchester United player, I’d be shocked. But what you can’t do with a player like that, with that kind of stature and personality, is keep them quiet. If they’ve got something to say, they’re going to say it. And they’re going to say it at a time where you don’t want to hear it.

“It was a telling comment. Erne Slott won’t welcome it. But he’ll just want to get to the end of the season, get out there, get everyone out there who won’t be there next season and try and build.”

Slott has indicated he hopes to oversee a busy summer transfer window at Liverpool, and Neville believes the Dutchmen will have the chance to turn things around next season, especially given former Reds player Xabi Alonso, who has finally tipped to return to Anfield as manager. The name is the boss of Chelsea.

“The signing of Xabi Alonso told me that Liverpool would keep their manager,” Neville said.

“Which I’m happy about. A manager who won the league 12 months ago, has had a more challenging season this time, deserves another chance to get it right. He’s still in the Champions League. But Salah’s comments won’t help.”

Salah’s blunt assessment of Liverpool

In a scathing assessment of Liverpool’s form this season, Salah said in a statement on social media: “I’ve seen this club go from skeptics to believers and champions from believers.

“It’s been hard work and I’ve always done what I can to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.

“Another defeat for us this season was very painful and not what our fans deserved. I want to see Liverpool go back to being a heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and a team that wants to win trophies. That’s the football I know how to play and that’s the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good.”

“It’s non-negotiable and everyone who joins this club has to adapt to it. There’s winning some games and that’s not what Liverpool should be about. All teams will win games.

“Liverpool will always be a club that means a lot to me and my family. I want to see it succeed when I move on. As I’ve always said, qualifying for next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I’ll do everything I can to make that happen.”

Slott insists Liverpool will be an even better force next season

Meanwhile, the under pressure slot has promised to be better next season.

Liverpool’s trophyless season ends at home to Brentford on May 24. Depending on results at Bournemouth and Brighton over the next few days, Liverpool may need a positive result to finish in the top five in order to qualify for the Champions League.

The Dutchman admits supporters are not finding reason to be optimistic after a difficult campaign, but he expects better from his side next season.

“Right now I understand that they don’t have a lot of confidence or a feeling that things can get better next season,” Slott said.

“But I think then they’re underestimating what a window can do, what a fresh start can do, and I think we know very well what needs to be improved.

“I think one of the things that we need to improve on is very, very, very obvious, and I’d rather not talk about it here, but you’re actually almost forcing me to.

“If you miss out on nine players who could start a game of football and almost all of them have been starters for us or for a big part of the season, if you can improve that in a window and add players who are playing in their second season in the Premier League, it automatically takes a lot more.

“I don’t think the differences are that big, just that in a few situations the right thing might already have an optimal huge upside potential.”
