The Dutch coach was suddenly fired
“Liverpool” FC is preparing to start official talks with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola in the coming days, in a decisive move towards appointing a replacement for Dutch coach Arne Sloat, who was recently sacked.
Sources familiar with the matter have told ESPN that Liverpool are making a strong move for Iraola, who heads the list of candidates to take over, as management look to make a technical change that embraces a more aggressive attacking style of play and high pressing.
Liverpool sacked Slott last Saturday after a disappointing season that saw them lose 20 games in various competitions and finish fifth in the Premier League.
The decision to give up the Dutch coach came with reluctance, especially since last season (2024-2025) he managed to win the English Premier League title at the first attempt, succeeding Jurgen Klopp.
The English club are looking to appoint a new manager before the start of the Club World Cup on June 11 to give the new manager the maximum opportunity to prepare and integrate with the squad before the start of the new season.
The 43-year-old Iraola stands out as the most obvious candidate, ahead of the German coach, Stuttgart coach Sebastian Höhnes.
Iraola’s contract with Bournemouth expires at the end of the current season, after three successful years in which he led the team to a top-six finish for the first time in their history, qualifying for European competitions.
Iraola was recruited to Bournemouth by current Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who was highly impressed by his previous performances with Rayo Vallecano.
The Spanish coach’s financial demands of £10m a year are not expected to pose any obstacles, especially as they match Arne Slott’s salary.
Notably, Liverpool are looking forward to a new era that will see them regain their strong competition for domestic and European titles next season.
