Life in the Four Seasons Review – dancers of all ages experience spring | Dancing

Met was a great idea: to dance in the four seasons of life, with dancers whose ages range from spring to winter, which is meant to be a remake of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Neatly. It’s amazing to see older dancers who are able to bring all of their experiences to the stage. But the thing that is common to many people, who all create different styles, is that the dance can be somewhere in between: everyone can do it but it doesn’t play to everyone’s strengths. The movement reaches a bit of a street dance, locked in a basic 4/4 rhythm. It’s when you see a signature dancer – the brilliant Michael Naylor having trouble/falling in the club, for example – that you think, “Oh, this is what we’re missing.”

Choreography by American Alexzandra Sarmiento, who works mainly in music and as a theater director, together with director Tinuke Craig. Prepared by three dancers for each season, they are always dressed in blue, pink and orange, which we come to realize represent the head, heart and guts of a person, although it is not clear at first. The set has boxes printed with “HEAD”, “HEART” and “GUT”, but (to me, anyway) it wasn’t obvious because it didn’t seem relevant to the dance.

For the song, Vivaldi was cut and chopped by DJ Walde, known for his funky hip-hop spins for ZooNation Dance Company. Back in 2012, the composer Max Richter he also wrote his masterpiece of the Four Seasons, which has been used continuously in dance, and it is very difficult to take the same part. Walde’s version adds another punch with sides and strings. In several key areas, such as the club scene, Vivaldi is reduced to a sample and the beat takes over, and suddenly everyone feels more in their comfort zone.

In the end, there isn’t enough strength of story or character or purpose to carry this show. It is admirable that Regent’s Park has dedicated itself to inviting dance, proving to the common people that dance does not need to have music or text to be good theater. But if you convert people, it must be very good.
