Library policies (and library promotional activities)

Summer is almost here, and that means getting outside, enjoying the sun, and touching the grass. But if you want to cool it down a bit, let me sing the library’s praises. If your local library system is anything like mine, it probably offers a lot of great things to do, all tech-related and not, at no extra cost.

I am part of Multnomah County Library systemand I’m honestly confused by all the things that are available with a free library card. What I use the most is being able to fill my Kindle with the many ebooks that are created through it OverDrivea platform that partners with thousands of libraries to share their digital collections. Because of this choice, I always have something to read; I can list 10 ebooks, and I usually do this when I get a recommendation from a friend or see something that interests me. Once the touch is in place, it’s just a matter of a few clicks to have the book ready to go on my Kindle the next time I open it.

Sure, sometimes it can take weeks to get ready, especially popular books. I waited a long time to catch it Project Praise Mary to pass. (I have to wait!) But I’m such a slow reader that the wait usually doesn’t bother me. When I open my email and see a notification that the book I’ve been waiting for is ready for me to download, it’s exciting. OverDrive also has an app, Libbywhere you can read books and magazines and listen to audio books.

OverDrive says works with “more than 92,000 public libraries, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, and organizations in 115 countries around the world,” so there’s a good picture to be found. If you want to see if your library or school supports it, you can Check out the OverDrive website.

My library card doesn’t just let me borrow ebooks, though; My library system is also compatible with a free service called Hopewhich gives me access to many commercials, TV shows, music, and comic books through its website and app. Thanks to Hoopla, I often listen to new music that day that starts on other games, and my wife has grown to love shows like. There are a few big caveats: The catalog isn’t the same as what you’d find on a paid service like Netflix or Spotify, the movies aren’t in 4K, and you’re limited to a limited amount of content you can rent each month. But overall, Hoopla is a great place to find something new to explore, and best of all, it doesn’t cost me anything. Yes, the library has more physical books I would look to read, too. Even though I read a lot on my Kindle, there’s something irresistible about sitting down on the couch and opening a real book every time. (It helps that the physical book doesn’t run out of battery!) The Multnomah County Library system also offers DVDs and music CDs, so there’s plenty of other material to check out. Some library systems lend out video games, which seem like a great way to explore new titles a very expensive habit.

So far I’ve only talked about things you can borrow from the library, but many libraries offer valuable community support such as computers, printers, meeting rooms, programs for children and youth, and more. makerspaces. And a library can also be a nice, quiet place to hang out for a while, especially if it’s air-conditioned.

You can have a busy summer with places to visit and things to try. But you have to leave some space in your schedule for a trip to the library. I know I will be visiting several times.
